Kansas City Restaurant Week

It's no secret...I love food. I honestly had no intentions of my New Year's resolution or blog to revolve around food...but here we go again. :) I also didn't intend on this particular event to be a "what the heck...why not?" moment...that is until the snowpocalypse of 2010 hit.

Restaurant week in Kansas City has been something I have been looking forward to for quite some time, so when the storm hit I was definitely bummed. Well, apparently I am not the only one who loves to eat, because Brandon insisted we still go out and brave the arctic temperatures...and I figured "what the heck...why not?" It's not like I had to work the next day :)
With so many choices we decided on Pizza Bar at Power and Light. Their restaurant week special was a pizza, 2 pints of beer and a $10 gift card for $25! The pizza was delicious, the beer as always amazing and the company was even better :)

Domestically Challenged?

I am by no stretch of the imagination a good cook. I don't enjoy it...I don't have the patience for it and I can't seem to follow simple directions...and I am a teacher? I have managed to mess up quite a few meals in my life...when I screwed up Tuna Helper I realized I had hit rock bottom ;)
When I was thinking about my New Year's resolution I first thought about making a "bucket list" or a list of things to accomplish this year, and on that initial list was learning to cook a new dish each month. Well, as I kept thinking about my resolution I didn't want to limit myself to a list or new things I haven't done before.
Now it may not seem like it fits my resolution BUT cooking is not something I usually choose to do...so...wait for it...."What the heck....Why not?"
Yet another snow day gave me the time and man power to learn to cook. My friend Dan works down the street from my house and with Snowmageddon, Snowpocalypse or Blizzard of Oz on it's way, he decided to come to my house after work to avoid having to drive all the way back to Gardner. When he left work he called and said he was going to stop by the grocery store so we could have dinner. When he showed up he had bags of groceries...and he says "I am going to teach you how to make chicken parmigiana" Of course I looked at him like he was crazy...but again I told myself "What the heck...why not?" (you think I say this alot on the blog...you should hang out with me! lol!!)

I took a picture of the ingredients for 2 reasons. 1) a before pic and 2) So I would know what ingredients I needed IF I decided to cook this meal again. Now I am just looking for someone who is brave enough to be my guinea pig ;)

The "after" picture...I will admit I didn't do it all by myself BUT I am pretty sure I could cook this meal by myself after this experience.

hmmm...I refuse to take responsibility for the burnt bread...SOMEONE forgot about it ;)

Groupon

Thanks to my friend Laura, I have been introduced to one of the coolest web-sites ever. It is called Groupon. This site has a daily "groupon" that you can purchase. You can buy a groupon valued at $40 for only $20. I'm terrible at explaining what it is so visit the site and check it out!

Groupon has really helped me broaden my horizons when it comes to eating out. I am one of those people that eats at the same restaurants and orders the same thing just about every time. I am a connoisseur of chicken strips and hamburgers ;) Needless to say I am not the only groupon junkie...I have several friends who are equally as obsessed! My friend Brandon is one such friend. He and I got to talking about our groupon obsession and he mentioned he had a groupon expiring soon...and me loving food I of course volunteered to help him use it ;)

His groupon was to an Italian restaurant called Cascones...and who doesn't love Italian? When we got to the restaurant I started reading the menu and thinking to myself Where is the plain spaghetti and meatballs? Why don't they have raviolis?! I started to panic...what would I eat :) After looking over the menu and finding 2 different dishes that sound alright I couldn't decide which one...well my resolution guided my decision yet again...one of the two dishes was made with veal. I have never had veal...and thought to myself "What the heck....why not?"
Here I am with my Cannelloni Florentine, which was delicious!

Just for fun I included another "groupon" adventure. Friday night a group of us went downtown for dinner and drinks. After much discussion about where to go we decided on Dog Nuvo, a gourmet hot dog place. I was a little apprehensive after checking out the menu online...I even considered asking for a hotdog with only cheese on it...I told you I am not adventurous with food! When we got there I checked the menu one last time and decided to just go for it...I decided to order 2 hot dogs (don't judge) and I ordered the Mac n' Cheese dog and the KC. The Mac n' Cheese dog was a hot dog covered in macaroni and bacon bits...this was definitely my favorite. The KC was covered in burnt ends, an American Royal bbq sauce and butter pickles, this was also amazing!

If you haven't signed up for groupon yet DO IT! It doesn't cost to join and you don't have to buy anything...but I promise you that you will ;)
