13 weeks: Kicking Nausea to the Curb!

Definitely feeling...and looking bigger this week. My clothes are snug and I spend way more time than normal trying to pick out something to wear. At this point I just look kind of chubby...and it's a mental game every time I get dressed. My mid-section just looks thick and shapeless...I am looking forward to the day I actually look pregnant, instead of just like I have gained a few lbs.

How far along?
13 weeks...and in my last week of the 1st trimester and looking forward to the 2nd trimester; which has been described as the honeymoon phase of pregnancy! I fully intend to enjoy these next several weeks...and put the woes of first trimester far behind me!

How big is baby?
A lemon or toy car  (~3" and .81oz)

What's baby up to this week?
Baby is forming vocal cords and even though teeny tiny, he or she already has fingerprints!

Symptoms?
I am knocking on every wooden thing around me right now...but I have completely turned a corner. I had VERY little nausea this week...like almost none, and it was glorious! Monday morning I woke up feeling great...I told AJ I didn't realize how bad I truly felt until I had a morning where I felt great! The fatigue is still there...but that I can handle. Not one instance of gagging or dry-heaving this week and I am OH SO THANKFUL!

Maternity Clothes?
Just my belly band! Hoping to get by with my leggings, dresses, and regular clothes for as long as possible!

Sleep?
Eh...off and on. I have some nights where I sleep great and there were a few where I couldn't fall asleep or stay asleep.

Missing Anything?
Not a thing!

Craving?
Nothing too specific...but I still enjoy my warm carbs.

Aversions?
The thought of cucumbers doesn't make my stomach turn, but I think I will avoid them a bit longer and the smell of hand sanitizer is still a stomach churner.

Emotions?
I got to share my exciting news with friends, co-workers, and even my students. How can I not be over the moon happy? Keeping this secret, feeling as awful as I did was really hard. Now, not only is the secret out...but I feel SOOOO much better.

Best Moment of the week?
Getting to tell my teacher friends at our weekly girls' dinner. I was able to completely catch them off guard! We were talking about my friend Erin's family photos and I casually said "speaking of photos, I have one to show you guys" and I whipped out the sonogram. The looks on their faces were priceless...and the screams that followed...well let's just say AJ could hear us over the lawnmower :) It's moments like this that I feel even more grateful for my little framily.

Pregnancy Brain Moments?
None that I can think of...#BadumpPsh

Looking forward to?
Fall! We have already gotten a wonderful glimpse of the beautiful fall weather this week and I can't wait to fully enjoy these next few months!

Projects/Baby Gear purchased?
Nada! Although I am itching to get started on the nursery...it's not too soon right?

Running?
This is a close second for best moment of the week...I ran 5 miles on Sunday and it felt WONDERFUL! They weren't kidding when they said "it will get better" HOWEVER, one day this week I decided to walk instead of run and threw in some light strength training (5lb weights...watch out!) and I think I did a total of 30 squats/lunges of different varieties...and let's just say that I was sore for several days after!! You can definitely tell I neglected more than just running during the first trimester!

12 Weeks: That sweet, sweet, heartbeat

Well hello there baby bump...it made it's grand entrance this week! It's not obvious to anyone else...and likely just looks like I have eaten one too many donuts lately ;)

How far along?
12 weeks

How big is baby?
A plum or an army man (2" long, .49oz)

What's baby up to this week?
Baby's reflexes are starting to develop as the brain continues to grow and become more complex. Kidneys are starting to function and he/she is starting to build up the waste he/she will store until the first poop...mommy and daddy sure can't wait for that ;)

Symptoms?
It's been so inconsistent this week...after a late night Friday I was overly tired and emotional on Saturday, but felt pretty good nausea wise. The next two days were pretty rough with nausea...and oh boy, the exhaustion! I also had a few days where I felt pretty good and it gives me hope that I am beginning to see the light at the end of this first trimester tunnel! I sure can't wait to stop gagging every time I brush my teeth ;)

Maternity Clothes?
Nope! However, I did have to use the rubber band trick this week...the jeans I was wearing that day were a little snug by the end of the day. I wouldn't say I am "showing" but there is definitely a little bitty bump starting. I also purchased my first belly band...my jeans are good in the morning, but by the end of the day I am pretty uncomfortable so I think it's time I gave in and started wearing it.

Sleep?
My allergies cut me some slack this week and seemed to have disappear. I have had a few sneezing attacks, but other than that I felt MUCH better! My sleep is hit and miss...I fall asleep FAST...but often wake up a few times in the night to use the restroom. What I wouldn't give for a completely uninterrupted night of sleep...guess I need to give up on that one, because once baby comes it will be a thing of the past for sure!

Missing Anything?
Feeling like myself...being tired all the time is exhausting ;)

Craving?
I am still a fan of warm comfort type foods...and I also think I had my first official pregnancy craving. All I could think about Monday was a smoothie...and Tuesday morning I just had to stop and grab one before work...and then again this morning :)  This craving was/is different than other cravings I have had in the past because I could not get it out of my head and I HAD to have it!

Aversions?
I contemplated trying a cucumber this weekend at my parents...but it was an extra queasy day so I decided not to chance it, but other than that nothing.

Emotions?
I had a pretty mopey/weepy day on Saturday...but I blame my lack of sleep, but other than that I have felt pretty good.

Best Moment of the week?
Hands down hearing that sweet little baby's heartbeat at our 12 week doctor's appointment! That sound was music to this mama-to-be's ears! I went to that appointment feeling very nervous and worried...and walked out with the giddiest of happy feelings.

Pregnancy Brain Moments?
I have 400 lists in my phone...without it I would be a lost-cause. If you tell me something important...make sure to tell me twice :) I also mis-speak a lot...at the doctor's office I ended up getting my flu shot and made a joke that I hoped I wouldn't be getting poked with noodles at every visit...noodles, needles...same thing, right?

Looking forward to?
Telling all of our friends!! This secret has not been an easy one to keep...I can't wait to share our exciting news with our framily :)

Projects/Baby Gear purchased?
Nothing this week, but we will likely start buying a package of diapers each week from now until the baby comes. I want to stock up so it's less of a shock when the baby comes :)

Running?
Running and working out was MUCH better this week! I ran 4 miles without stopping this weekend and I even signed up for a race in October! I will be a part of a KC Marathon relay team...a full marathon isn't in the cards for me this year (and let's face it, probably not next year either) but this will have to be good enough for now :)

This guy was feeling a little left out of our weekly photo-shoots ;)

This photo from above shocked me a bit...definitely looking bumpalicious this week!

11 weeks: Hand Sanitizer...how I loathe you!

This week I am not sure I can blame the bump on a big dinner...it definitely started to become more obvious this week. My pants benefited from the rubber band trick for sure :)

How far along?
11 weeks

How big is baby?
A lime or a poker chip...which seems very different to me. Maybe a very small lime or a large poker chip? Who knows!? (1.61"/0.25oz)

What's baby up to this week?
Baby has working arm joints and cartilage and bones are forming. Fingernails and hair are starting to appear too! My app says he/she is moving around and even hiccupping, but I won't be able to feel those movements for another month or so.

Symptoms?
I have honestly felt MUCH better this week...I even got a few days of minimal nausea, which was a nice break. I am still really fatigued, but I have managed to run a little more (and a little further) this week. I'm starting to notice my pants getting a little snug towards the end of the day...which I think at this point is just bloating.

Maternity Clothes?
Still holding strong, a few pairs of my pants are a little snug by days end...so I have been sticking to leggings and dresses as much as possible.

Sleep?
My allergies came on with a vengeance this week so my sleep hasn't been the greatest, seeing as I can't breathe. Not much is on my approved medication list...but luckily my trusty Benedryl made the cut. A couple of nights this week I popped a Benny before bed and slept MUCH better! I still woke up to use the restroom (this was a very zombie like experience) but I was able to breathe much better.

Missing Anything?
Nothing too much this week...I still miss my energy, but I am slowly getting used to this constant state of exhaustion ;)

Craving?
Italian food/Warm comfort foods...Bring on fall and all the crock-pot meals!

Aversions?
Haven't given cucumbers a try, but just the thought makes me a little queasy so I will avoid at all costs! This week I also noticed the smell  of hand-sanitizer made me a little queasy...who knew what a strong smell it had?!?

Emotions?
Much better this week! I seemed to get out of my funk and haven't been nearly as mopey.

Best Moment of the week?
My 3 mile run on Sunday...it was gorgeous outside, and I was able to run the ENTIRE time without having to stop. Doesn't sound like much, but my body has been rebelling for the last few weeks, so it was a definite win in my books.

Pregnancy Brain Moments?
When talking about our fantasy football players and the points they scored this week I accidentally referred to my quarterback as "my president"

Looking forward to?
Jenni will be here TODAY!!!! I cannot wait to tell my sister-in-law that she is going to be an Auntie! It will be her first niece/nephew and I will never forget that feeling when I found out that I was going to be an Auntie for the first time! And next week we have our 12 week sonogram and will get to hear Baby Smith's heartbeat for the first time!!

Projects/Baby Gear purchased?
Nada!

Running?
Much better this week...but still hoping to get my mileage and especially endurance back to where it was. I have read several places that running is MUCH easier second trimester! Here's to hoping! I was pretty proud of myself this week because there were a couple of times when I REALLY wanted to come home from work and crawl straight into bed and I ran/walked instead...and I honestly felt much better after. It's just hard to remember that when you are a walking zombie after a full day of work!

10 Weeks: Ginger Candies...let's be friends.

How far along?
10 weeks

How big is baby?
A prune, kumquat, or strawberry depending on which app. I am looking at. (1.18"/0.14oz)

What's baby up to this week?
Baby has working arm joints and cartilage and bones are forming. Fingernails and hair are starting to appear too!

Symptoms?
No puking this week! Hallelujah! My ginger candies and my new routine of eating a bowl of cereal first thing have helped. I am still pretty nauseous and have had some dry heaving spells...but I don't mind as long as I am not throwing up! I also had some pretty weird stretching pains last night...strong enough to wake me up at one point. It kind of feels like I got a killer ab workout...but let's be honest, that is NOT that case :)

Maternity Clothes?
Nope! However, my app says this is the week I might see the weight gain speed up. I haven't gained any weight thus far (I am actually down a few pounds) so I don't mind one bit!

Sleep?
I am still waking up at least 2 times per night...drinking a lot of water has helped keep the nausea at bay, so I suppose the minor sleep disturbances are worth it :)

Missing Anything?
Energy and motivation to run/workout...especially because the physical activity seems to help with my lack of energy and the nausea.

Craving?
Nothing really this week...

Aversions?
Cucumbers have still not been consumed...but I did buy some ice cream at the grocery store and have yet to want any of it...looks like my sweet tooth is on vacation!

Emotions?
Mopey again this week...it was a busy week with something going on just about every night...and being the homebody I am mixed with exhaustion it wasn't a good combination.

Best Moment of the week?
We got our new carpet installed upstairs this week! The guest bedroom/nursery is now a clean slate ready for all the baby things!

Pregnancy Brain Moments?
Nothing major...a few word mix ups this week, but like I said that's pretty normal.

Looking forward to?
Old Settlers...and all the grange pups, walking tacos, and funnel cakes!!!

Projects/Baby Gear purchased?
I know I said we were going to wait until we found out the gender to buy anything, but on a FB swap site I found the PERFECT buffet/hutch that we plan on using for a dresser/changing table. It's pretty spectacular if I do say so myself...although, it needs a little more TLC than anticipated.

Running?
With our carpet being installed this week Ol' Millie girl spent most of the week disassembled in the living room....that paired with the heat meant very little running for me this week. On Saturday however, the weather was absolutely PERFECT for a 5k I ran/walked with my friend Heather. Now that the treadmill is back together, and I am not throwing up in the mornings I am hoping to get back into a more regular routine :)

13 months: Yes, we are still doing this :)

Our one year anniversary has come and gone...and we may no longer be "newlyweds" but we had so much fun with our monthly dates over the past year that we decided to keep it going.

And if we are going to keep our monthly dates going then I MUST blog about our monthly happenings right along with it right? ;)

This month was a weird month...we didn't do much, but with back to school craziness that was to be expected. Our monthly date was extremely low key (although we had something planned...it just didn't quite work out and got moved to next month) but it was just what we needed this month. Not all date nights involve leaving the house okay?

I know I alluded to a low key month...but it actually started out with a bang...quite literally! Early in the morning of our one-year anniversary our house was struck by lightning...talk about a celebration ;)

The only good thing to come out of this may have been our new TV :) We had plans to replace the 42" TV from AJ's college years, and this just sped up the process. Our new 60" TV might be a bit of an overkill...but when hubby is happy, everyone is happy (Isn't that the saying?)

We also got to celebrate Chad and Sarah's recent nuptials at the "I Do, BBQ"

The Smith's sure know how to party! Great music, great food, and best of all great company :)

We got a chance to babysit this cute little guy :)

As always he was a perfect angel! I could kiss and squeeze those cheeks all day long!

I started back to work...and contrary to what you believe this does not just affect me. Poor AJ got used to a rested wife who cooked dinner more often and made sure the house was clean. Life changes in August...at least until I get in the swing of things!

This year I am teaching 4th grade, and while it's not that different from 3rd (and I was lucky enough to keep some of my kiddos) getting into the swing of things took a little longer than normal. 5 years in one grade level puts you in a comfort zone! HOWEVER, mixing things up was the BEST decision I have made! I love, love, love my 4th graders!

Remember how I told you this month was pretty low key...well here is your proof. That's it...that is all the notable things we did this month...or at least the ones I took pictures of. I would like to say that I hope next month is more eventful...but then I would be lying. I am a homebody at heart and I love, love, love staying in!

The homebody in my really enjoyed this month's date...it spoke all my love languages.

We started with dinner at a Chinese place close to our house...

Stopped for ice cream at Orange Leaf...

And then grabbed a Redbox and headed home for snuggles on the couch!

Not the most exciting month in our marriage...but one we enjoyed nonetheless!

9 weeks: WOOF!

Maybe it's me...but gosh it sure looks like there is a bump trying it peek itself out of there...again, I blame it on bloat and a big dinner. Maybe I should start taking these photos BEFORE dinner ;)

How far along?
9 weeks

How big is baby?
A green olive or a cherry  (.91"/0.07oz)

What's baby up to this week?
Tiny muscles are beginning to form and baby is officially a fetus :)

Symptoms?
Nausea, fatigue, and vomiting has made its grand entrance...WOOF! This week all of the symptoms seemed to peak! I knew these were all common and was prepared...but mistakenly thought it would be easy to just "power through" I have felt very wimpy and pathetic this week. I have been napping more than usual and early bedtimes are a must! I ordered some ginger candies on Amazon and bought some Ginger Ale at the grocery store, and while the ginger flavor is not my favorite it does offer some relief.

Maternity Clothes?
Nope!

Sleep?
I have become a professional sleeper ;) Naps and falling asleep the minute my head hits the pillow is very common right now. I do however wake up several times during the night to use the restroom. I have tried cutting off my water consumption by 6PM at night...but I am just so darn thirsty, and it doesn't really seem to help. I am just grateful that I am falling back to sleep easily.

Missing Anything?
Running and working out. I am a big fan of endorphins and getting my heart-rate up...but lately it's been so hard to get motivated to run with the nausea and exhaustion. Sweating is such a stress reliever for me and not having that during the first few (stressful) weeks of school has been hard. I am hoping this week is the peak of symptoms and it will only be uphill from here!

Craving?
Still no cravings...but Sonic's 50 cent corn dogs were awfully tempting ;)

Aversions?
Cucumbers are still not appealing to me...which is a bummer because I am not a fan of many other raw veggies.

Emotions?
Exhaustion has led to a very mopey Heather...and while I wouldn't say I have been moody, I have definitely wanted to spend more time alone.

Best Moment of the week?
Telling our families! I wrote all about those 2 excitement filled days HERE.

Pregnancy Brain Moments?
Nothing major to report...words are still kind of hard this week, but again that is not out of the norm ;)

Looking forward to?
A 3-day weekend!

Projects/Baby Gear purchased?
Nada!

Running?
I miss it...that is all :( Hoping to get in a few more miles in the upcoming weeks! C'mon 2nd trimester!!!

August Book Review

I was quite worried about hitting my goal of 4 books for this month. August is typically a very busy month, with back to school crazies...that, and I tend to have a very hard time staying awake past 8:30 in August :)

Somehow though, I managed to pull it off...by the skin of my teeth! My 4th book was quite a struggle and I contemplated quitting mid-read, but I knew I would never have the time to finish another book so I powered through.

Minus book #4, this month was pretty good to me. I read 2 VERY good books, one pretty good book...and well book #4, can we call that "the book who shall not be named?'

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27209486-modern-lovers

This was my first book of for the month...and it was okay, but not great. It seemed to drag on a bit for me, but I enjoyed the story. I can't seem to muster up any more to say about this book...my apologies :)

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26247008-truly-madly-guilty

I love, love, love Liane Moriarty...and this book was no exception. It had plenty of twists and turns and unexpected moments to keep me interested. I won't say the entire book was flawless for me, because there were definitely a few moments/chapters where I struggled, but it was a book I would definitely recommend!

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21853621-the-nightingale

This book earns the "most improved" award from me. For the first 1/4 of the book I struggled to see the appeal, I struggled with "forcing" myself to read (which I blame in part on back to school exhaustion), but then BAM...it all turned around and I was a reading machine. I could not put this beautiful book down. It was set in my favorite time period (WW2) and gave me a glimpse of a different side of the war and the Nazi takeover than I usually read. I was in tears at the end of the book and was sad it was over. This was my first Kristin Hannah book, but definitely not my last!

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25986991-it-s-not-okay

I'm embarrassed to admit how excited I was to read this book. I absolutely love the Bachelor franchise (no shame) and loved Andi on both seasons. I could not wait to get my hands on this book and get a behind the scenes look at her "journey" to find love...

Womp, Womp....that is the best way I can describe how I felt 10 pages into this book. Andi came across as a snobby "too good for this" (pardon my language) bitch. She was basically "forced" and or tricked into auditioning, she battled with the decision to be the Bachelorette, and her break-ups were of course the guys fault. This book is written like a self-help book for a narcissistic, whiny, take no responsibility for your own actions, spoiled brat. I got awfully tired of reading about how her life was over and hearing about all the wine she consumed.

Please save yourself the time and frustration...stay far, far away!

That's all I managed for this month, which I have to say is pretty good considering I found myself asleep before the sun went down more nights than not this month. I'm looking forward to some pretty great books in September :)

Happy Reading!
