Gestational Diabetes Check In: Week 6


It's been a pretty uneventful week, which is exactly the way I like it! I had a doctor's appointment where the doctor was happy with my blood sugars, baby's size, and she again assured me that all is well! She said as long as I can remain diet controlled she will continue to treat this like a regular pregnancy...which is great news! 

From what I have read/heard 36 weeks is usually where the hormones peak and people either struggle to keep their numbers level with diet alone and tend to be put on meds or when things level out and it gets easier...so far I think I am one of the lucky ones. Keeping my fingers crossed this is the case!

Diet

I really thought that by this point I would be struggling hard core...but as with most things it has gotten easier as the weeks tick by. Sure, I wouldn't mind diving head-first into a bowl of candy...but I wouldn't say it's all that hard to avoid or not eat. 2 years ago when training for the Heartland 39.3 series and working towards my sub 1:45 half-marathons I managed to keep my diet pretty strict...so I guess it goes to show if I really want something I can show some pretty mean self-control...and what better motivator than a healthy baby?

We found a few new meals to try this week, but so far have only made one of them and let me tell you...O-M-G! I have been having a wicked craving for a cheeseburger lately and this totally hit the spot...I mean, minus the delicious bun and steak fries ;) but I will take what I can get right now!

Bacon Cheeseburger Cauliflower Casserole
**We actually used the Green Giant riced cauliflower to make prep a little quicker/easier and it turned out great! I honestly couldn't even taste the cauliflower, so if you are hesitant because of that...don't be! We even talked about getting some whole wheat buns for next time and eating it more like a sloppy joe...so we shall see :) 

Also, I had another mini-win this week...I had a bowl of cereal for breakfast (with a protein shake) and my blood sugars were only a 91! I can't tell you how happy this has made me...cereal is seriously one of my love languages and something I have missed like crazy! Granted I only had a cup of Kix (the blandest cereal ever) but it was a total win in my books! 
And, Fairlife Milk...this has been a total game-changer for me. I have been craving milk like crazy and this is high protein, low sugar, low carb milk that is still VERY delicious! I even had chocolate milk with breakfast once this week and my numbers stayed below target...WAHOO!

Testing

I loathe this part...it's a pain in the you know what! At first I really didn't mind because I liked knowing my numbers, and to some extent I still do, but they have been really consistent that I wouldn't mind testing less...or not at all ;) I forgot to ask my doctor at my last appointment, but I may ask her at the next one if I can cut down on testing...otherwise I will have to buy another box of testing strips...and those things are expensive!

We are down to 31-ish days until baby boy is here...which means if I keep testing 4x a day I have about 124 more finger pokes. Sounds like a lot...but having a countdown will definitely help keep me sane ;)

Exercise

 I love to exercise...always have, but this part is getting harder and harder the bigger I get. Running is getting tougher because of the swelling in my feet so I have been run/walking...with longer bouts of walking as the weeks go by, but Jazzercise has still been going pretty well, so I will keep that up as long as possible! I just keep hoping that what they say is true about exercise and an easier labor ;)


Emotionally

I've hit the "get this baby out of me" stage of pregnancy...we only have 4 more weeks, and I want him to cook as long as possible so he will be healthy and strong...but I am so ready to be un-pregnant. Besides the obvious discomforts of being HUGE...I'm ready to relax a little on my diet and eat some of my favorite foods...and have an ice cold beer!
