Life Lately: August

I've done a pretty miserable job with these posts lately...I'm not sure if it's that I don't take enough pictures or if we just don't do anything worth of taking pictures? Maybe a little bit of both?

Now, don't get me wrong...I take hundreds of pictures a week...but 99% of them are of Bennett #CantStopWontStop

August flew by in a blur of chaos. Going back to work and finding our new normal was exhausting, but also a blessing at the same time. I started back to school and while it was tough for the first few days, it's much easier now. I have a great class and that makes it easier to leave my sweet boy every day. Bennett started daycare, and he made the transition beautifully. He loves Miss Judy, and so do we. We have been blessed with the best of the best <3

Something else we started (again) was our monthly dates. When Bennett was born we easily fell into the trap of survival mode and let our relationship/time together fall to the wayside. Now that lil' man is a getting older we have decided it's time to make our relationship/time together a priority again.  We need to make time to be AJ and Heather...and not just mommy and daddy.

We technically started last month when we celebrated our 2 year anniversary at Main Event, but it doesn't really count because it was our anniversary and we HAD to go out #ItsTheRules

This month we decided to have a day date, and go see a movie...I think we have probably seen 4 movies together in the 5 years we have been together. Movies just aren't our thing...

We saw "The Hitman's Bodyguard" and we both really enjoyed it. Anything with Ryan Reynolds gets a huge thumbs up from me ;)

Other than our monthly date night day I didn't take any pictures, nor have we done anything picture worthy lol... I would say that I will do better next month -but we are halfway through September at this point, and I can't say I have taken any more photos #Eh #GoodIntentions

#MarathonMonday: Monday Schmonday

It's Wednesday...but feels like a Tuesday...and it's definitely not Monday...but welcome to my new normal ;)

Each week I have good intentions of either writing this post on Monday or writing it over the weekend and scheduling it...and each week that it doesn't happen I just shrug it off and think to myself "maybe next week" full well knowing that it's a lie ;)

I'm so sporadic and off schedule on these posts, I often sit down and don't even know where to begin. I could recap the week before...but if I am being honest I can hardly remember which days, how many miles, or how I felt while running...so they would be extremely riveting recaps lol!

This last week was a tough one for sure...lil' man wasn't sleeping the greatest and convincing myself to run was not an easy task. I ALWAYS feel better and more energized after a run (especially an early morning run) but reminding my zombie like self of that at 4 AM isn't always easy ;)

Luckily, we had a 3-day weekend and B took some pity on me and slept fabulously all weekend. I caught on up on some MUCH needed sleep AND it was my cut-back week so my long run only called for 8 miles.

A post shared by Heather (@wthwhynot2011) on

I was up around 5AM Saturday morning ready to pump and ready to run. I was going to run all 8 miles outside, but AJ has been having some shoulder pain that has been keeping him up at night so I took pity on him and ran the first 4 indoors so I didn't have to wake up (I always tell him I am leaving before an outdoor run, and put the monitor on his side of the bed) #WifeOfTheYear

The 4 miles on the treadmill were BRUTAL...I was congested and not feeling the greatest and being indoors was not helping. After finishing my 4 miles I almost called it quits, but convinced myself to get outside for at least a few miles...

Once I got going, the fresh air made me feel SO much better. Nothing fixes a head cold quite like fresh air and running! I was feeling so good in fact I decided to go for 10 miles instead of 8. I had cut a few runs short this past week due to time constraints so I knew I could use an extra couple of miles to hit my weekly mileage goal. I felt good in the beginning, but the last 2 miles of this run were pretty brutal...I'm not sure if it was all in my head (knowing I was only supposed to run 8) or if somehow my head cold got worse at that exact time. Either way...I survived to see another day ;)

Having Monday off for Labor Day was nice because I could sleep in and run during the day. There is nothing better than a nap time treadmill session, especially when I have my book to keep me company!

Lately, I have been logging most of my miles on the treadmill, and in years past I would have been cursing ol' Millie girls name...but nowadays I am just so grateful that I have it as an option. There is no way I would be able to put in the miles that I am outdoors...plus, it is much easier on my body. I have found that although my weekly mileage has increased significantly, I am not experiencing the aches and pains that I usually do #SilverLining

I do miss running outdoors, and with fall weather headed our way I am going to be trying to get outside more. I would like to take B on some runs as the temperatures get cooler, but my weekday runs are usually no less than 6 miles and I am not sure a) he would last or b) I would survive pushing a stroller that long #StrollerRunningAintNoJoke

Until next time my friends....

July/August Book Review

Thanks to e-books and afternoon naps I am still going strong with my reading goal and I am even ahead of schedule. I thought for sure that once school started back up I would struggle to find the time to read, but currently B takes a 45 minute nap when we get home in the evenings...and after being away from him all day I refuse to put him down #BabiesDontKeep; so it gives me some time each evening to snuggle with my babe and my current book.

I decided to combine July and August because well...the beginning of August was crazy and blogging got put on the back burner. Going back to work after 4 months at home has been a transition...and most of my free time is spent soaking up all the snuggles with B.

Time is a hot commodity around here these days, so this post will be short and sweet! If you want to see my ratings, more info on the books, or a complete list of books I have read you can find my Goodreads account HERE.

Uhhh....I am not really sure where to start with this book. I checked it out from the library and didn't have many expectations, which I suppose was a good thing. It was your typical mindless chick-lit read about an overweight girl who gets in shape, tries to impress a boy, blah blah blah. I didn't hate it...but I didn't love it.

Ugh...this book and the 2 that came before it top my list as my favorite guilty pleasures. I had been waiting very impatiently for this book to be released and then for it to become available to check out from the library. It was definitely worth the wait. I love this trilogy and have my fingers crossed there will be more! All 3 books take place in the same location, Mischief Bay, but each book focuses on different characters. I have loved all 3 equally, and they are books I would definitely recommend.

I'm slightly torn on this book...I liked it, couldn't put it down, and couldn't wait to find out how it ended...and then bam it ended I and I was left feeling like something was missing. I love a good mystery/suspense novel, but sometimes the ending can ruin it for me. Overall I would say this was a good book, but I wish the ending would have turned out to be different.

I'm a sucker for teen lit, so when I saw this book I knew it was one I needed to read. While I have to say I mostly enjoyed it, it definitely wasn't my favorite. The story line was pretty far fetched, but it definitely had a good "moral of the story" and some feel good moments. All in all, if you are a lover of teen lit I wouldn't say not to read this one...but I would say read some of the others on your list first ;)

My reviews were extra bland and vague this month, but nap time is almost over and I have some laundry to get done! One of these days I will figure out how to juggle my work/home/blog life ;)

Life With Benny: 5 Months

Diapers

He is still comfortably wearing size 2's and thanks to some longer stretches of sleep he needed some overnight diapers. They only make those in size 3, so while they are a little big they get the job done!

Clothes

He is wearing 3-6 months in almost all of his clothing, and honestly these days he just wears a onsie. It's hot, they are easy, and if I didn't have to wear pants every day I wouldn't either.

We said sayonara to the swaddle (which was short lived) and he now sleeps in gowns #TheyArentDresses

Also, when struggling to figure out this kids sleep habits and create a nap routine, he became really attached to what we call his "monkey suit" It is a fleece sleep sack type thing and this boy won't nap without it. He has always loved blankets and being snuggled, so this thing puts him right to sleep.
Food

We are still exclusively breastfeeding, but most of his meals come from a bottle now that he has started daycare. I nurse him in the morning before work, after work, and before bed...and occasionally at 3AM.

At his 4 mo check-up the doctor mentioned that we could start rice cereal if we really wanted to, but nutritionally there was no benefit, so we could wait until he was 6 mos old to introduce any and all foods. We decided to skip the rice cereal, but have been thinking about introducing a few pureed veggies sometime this next month.

Sleep

I am almost afraid to write this...I'm a superstitious person, and things have been going really well in the sleep department and I would like to keep it that way ;)

Sleep (and lack of it) has easily been the hardest part of parenting thus far, but this month it's like it all just "clicked" and we are no longer fighting an uphill battle (until I post this, that is)

The biggest change in his sleeping has been that he now puts himself to sleep. It started with bedtime and eventually transferred to naps and it has been the most freeing and wonderful thing. He doesn't cry, he just talks to himself and kicks his legs and about 10 mins later (or less) he is sound asleep.

Not only is he putting himself to sleep but he is sleeping much longer stretches. The majority of the time he gives us anywhere from 6-8 hour stretches and just last week he gave us almost 5 days in a row of sleeping completely through the night...like 8PM-5AM #AMAZING

Most of the time though he goes down around 8 and wakes up once between 3AM and 4AM and goes right back to bed until about 7 when we have to wake him up.

Naps have gotten much better as well. They still aren't very consistent, but he is falling asleep on his own and taking one long nap and 3 shorter naps.

He started daycare this month and sleep was my biggest worry. I thought for sure he would fight naps and end up over-tired and cranky...and as usual, he surprised us all with taking a 3 hour nap on his first day. He has continued to take one long nap (2-3 hours) and at least one shorter nap at daycare. He does fight his afternoon nap, but I think it's because he just can't wait for mommy to come pick him up :)

**I should never have spoken about this...I should have kept my mouth shut and enjoyed the 8-10 hour stretches of sleep at night. I wrote this about a week before he turned 5 mos old and in that week there was some major regression. Waking every 3 hours has become the norm...I have been trying not to feed him (because I know he can go all night) but he is starving...I'm guessing this is another growth spurt #ImLeTired #WhyDidIOpenMyBigMouth

Milestones

This month he laugh laughed for the very first time and let me tell you there is no sweeter sound in the world than that little boys giggle! Of course the first thing that made him giggle was Gracie and her crazy fetch antics. Nowadays you can find AJ and I doing anything and everything in our power to get a giggle out of him...but he is still pretty stingy ;)

He isn't quite sitting up yet, but I would say we are getting close. He prefers to be upright pretty much all the time and he can sit for short periods of time with the help of his boppy. I am a little nervous about letting go though...because a few weeks ago he took a face plant right into the carpet. He only cried for a second...mommy cried much longer.
He started daycare and has been a total champ! Ms. Judy said he is always in a good mood (unless he is hungry) and he seriously lights up when he sees her and the other boys. It makes it so much easier to leave him each day when I know he loves being there.

His hand-eye coordination has also improved tremendously, if he sees something he wants he can grab it...and then it goes straight into his mouth.

He got to go on his very first stroller run this month...and he loved it! He even fell asleep on our cool down walk. He is still in the car seat when I run, but I have a feeling he will be even happier once he can sit forward facing. I run in the morning most of the time and running with a stroller is tough, so we have only been a few times thus far.

Likes

His feet finally touch the floor in his jumper and he LOVES this thing. He would jump forever if we would let him.

He has a very weird obsession with the throw pillows on the couch. I can't decide if it's the pattern or the texture, but he is always grabbing at and rubbing his hands across them.

He is still a big fan of his play-mat and often times when we are trying to play with him on the floor we catch him staring (longingly) at his "friends"

He loves daycare and watching the bigger kiddos play.

The bath is still one of his favorite places to be, and this month the splashing and yelling has gotten a little more intense.

Dislikes

He is still pretty easy going and happy go lucky these days. The only time he gets even the slightest bit fussy is when he is hungry or tired.

Highlights

He spent some time with his buddy, Theo <3 I can't wait to see the shenanigans our little framily of boys gets into as they get older.

He LOVED his first stroller run with mommy!

We started sitting him at the dinner table with us in the evenings. He is VERY interested in what we are eating...good thing it's almost time for some food!

He helped mommy in her classroom! I thought we wouldn't be able to stay long because he was going to need a nap, but the little champ took a 45 min nap in his car seat even with all the noise!

Mommy started back to work, so there were LOTS of afternoon nap snuggles that first week or two.

We went to dinner at Red Robin with our buddy Caleb...and his parents ;)

Got lots of love from his big cousins.

and spent an evening with Grammy and Poppy

He spent several Saturday mornings bonding with daddy while mommy was out on her long runs...

and then participated in some long run recovery :)

Bubble crowns became a thing this month...

Back to work for mommy meant she needed an assistant and B was happy to oblige.

The pillow obsessions is real!

Finally we spent a Saturday morning at cousin Finley's soccer practice. This guys loves being outside and watching the big kids play, so he was in heaven...plus he got to hang with his Uncle Brandon.

This month seem to sweep by in the blink of an eye! Going back to work meant our time together was cut drastically, but nowadays we are just sure to make the best of our evenings and weekends!

More appropriately named #MarathonMadness

Clearly #MarathonMonday isn't working for me....#MarathonMadness seems much  more appropriate, especially as I sit here at 4:30AM pumping and writing this post ;)

I considered scrapping these posts altogether, but over the last few days my Marathon Monday posts from the Kansas City Marathon have been popping up on my TimeHop and I have loved going back and reading about my experiences while training for my first marathon. This time around the training has been VERY different...and I find it comical that 3 years ago I thought I was "tired" Of course the beginning of the school is always exhausting...but back then I came home after school and took naps, slept through the night, and only got up early a few mornings a week to run.

If the me of the 3 years ago could see my sleep schedule now, she would never complain again ;) Lil' man was doing phenomenally last week with sleeping and was consistently giving us 8 hour stretches and even a few nights of 9+ hours! However, for whatever reason (likely ANOTHER growth spurt) that changed...this past week he started waking up every 3-4 hours and was demanding to be fed. On top of all of this it was an extra busy week at work filled with early mornings and late nights....needless to say Friday night couldn't come soon enough.

Last night I climbed into bed at 7:30...and was out by 8. B must have known how tired I was because last night he slept almost 9 hours straight and this mama got 8 hours! #INeededThat

I am now gearing up to run my "long run" this week. I was very pleased to see that it only calls for 8 miles...it's the ever appreciated cut-back week around here. I was going to run more since I have had to cut a couple of runs short due to time, but I am not feeling 100% so this break is MUCH needed!

I'm looking forward to getting this run done and moving on to enjoying the 3-day weekend with my lil' guy!
