Life With Benny: ONE!

It's here...your first birthday. How is this even possible? The last 365 days have flown by in a blink of an eye. Sweet boy, you have forever changed our lives and our hearts. We never knew such a deep love existed until we met you. You radiate happiness and fun...and it's impossible for anyone to be sad when they are around you. This last year has simultaneously been the hardest and most wonderful year of our lives. You have taught us so many things in such a short time, but the most important lesson is to let go of expectations and smile through the mess...and savor each moment, because even the tough ones, don't last.

Diapers

We are still comfortably in size 4s, since we sized up early they are not only still fitting they aren't even close to being too small. I have a feeling it will be several more months in this size. We switched to Target's Up&Up brand and have been really happy. No blowouts or leaks...and they are lots cheaper.

Clothes

We completely retired all 9 month clothing and his 12 month stuff is even getting a little snug. We mostly notice it in his onsies, they are pulling at the neck. I'm not sure I can bring myself to buy him 18mo sizes though...that just seems SO big!
Food

He is still nursing in the mornings and at night, and taking two bottles at daycare. We have slowly been introducing whole milk by mixing it in his bottles. We started out with just an ounce and slowly added more each week. I stopped pumping after spring break (SWEET FREEDOM) and we used up the rest of our freezer stash getting him to his first birthday.

In the mornings once I have fed him we put him in his high chair and give him some pancakes and/or bananas. He eats breakfast at Miss Judy's, but since he has gotten mobile his high chair is our "safe place" so we can make our breakfasts and pack lunches...plus, this little piggy LOVES breakfast foods. I don't think he minds getting to eat breakfast twice :)

He is eating lunch with the big kids at Judy's as well and it has been so nice not to have to worry about packing him his own special lunch. She always has a good variety of foods that he likes so it works out well.

He is pretty fickle with his food. One day he will chow down on any and everything and then the next day it's like we are serving him liver and onions. We just keep offering him what we are eating and then a side of carrots and/or fruit and he seems to be just fine. He is also big on feeding himself...if there is a spoon or fork around he MUST be holding it...so needless to say all of his foods are finger foods these days :)

We all love the baby food pouches. They are super easy and apparently really delicious. Whenever Benny sees one he lights up, although when he is done with it, it always goes flying...as does most of his food when he is "done" Gracie doesn't mind picking up the leftovers though :)

Sleep

Oh goodness...this boy. Just when I think we have a good routine down...it changes :) He was doing really well with going down for naps and bedtime without being nursed...but then he got sick. I swear, I understand now why moms are so paranoid about germs and their kids getting sick because one little cold can set you back MONTHS!

After our 3rd bout of croup, we had several nights where little man would wake up screaming in the middle of the night. He only wanted mama, he wanted me to stand up and rock him, and he refused to go back to sleep...it was fun :)

We contributed part of it to teething and part of it to separation anxiety. To help with the separation anxiety I finally gave him a lovie to sleep with. This seemed to help with the falling asleep...but the staying asleep took a session of letting him cry it out. Before bed last weekend AJ and I both agreed that we would let him cry for 10-15 minutes before going in to him. I always get super anxious thinking about letting him cry...but it works EVERY.SINLGE.TIME and honestly he only cries for a few minutes before falling back asleep. I don't know why we always wait so long to do this....especially because the night we decided to let him cry, he slept from 7:00PM to almost 8 the next morning...seriously, I haven't slept in that late in a year! :) Since that night we have been back to a better routine. He is still going to bed about 7:00 and waking up around 6:30.

Naps have been a little more consistent this month...at home he will take about an 1 1/2 nap in the morning and another 1 1/2 hour nap in the afternoon. At daycare he is taking a 30-45 minute nap in the mornings and 1 1/2-2 hour nap in the afternoon depending on the day.

Milestones

It seemed like overnight he found his words and started talking like crazy.

His favorite word is of course dog...but unfortunately for us it sounds an awful lot like a word that starts with a c and rhymes with dock. I'm really hoping he gets the -d sound down soon, because I die a little every time he says that word in public ;)

He also says (and recognizes) mama, dada, papa, book (guk), teeth (tees), uh-oh, go, eat, cat, and boo.

He will repeat a lot of the words we say, but I am not really sure he understands what they mean yet. It has been crazy to see how quickly his language has developed...and I have a feeling he will be quite the talker...not sure where he gets that from ;)

-He is walking around while holding on to things now. He will walk around the coffee table, transfer from his activity cube to the chairs, and push his walker around.

-He is climbing on everything! He climbed up all the stairs and we can regularly find him sitting on the fireplace. We seriously can't turn our backs!

-He upgraded to his big boy car seat (in my car at least) and I am not sure if it's a coincidence, but he seems to hate riding in the car a little bit less these days :)

-Benny went "swimming" for the first time. We went to the Olathe Community Center over spring break and he had a blast! He has absolutely no fear and was crawling out into deeper water and I am not sure he would have stopped it I hadn't grabbed him!

Likes

-Books, books, and more books. He now points at the pictures and "talks" while we read and it's probably the cutest thing I have ever seen. He also prefers to do all of his reading on the fireplace...

He finally figured out how to push the buttons on his Elmo on the farm book, and we have listened to "Farmer in the Dell" no less than 3,000 times. He is so proud of himself when he pushes it and will look at us and start dancing.
-He love, love, loves music and is constantly shaking his booty. His favorite "stage" is the fireplace and he will put his hands on the fireplace and shake his booty.

-Benny got to ride the tractor for the first time with Papa and he LOVED it! He could hardly contain his excitement and laughed, squealed, and clapped the whole time.

-He loves playing "chase" and when we get down on the ground and crawl towards him he will squeal and "run" away laughing. His favorite is when we crawl around the ottoman and hide from him and jump out and say "boo" He has even started saying boo when he comes around the corner.

-He loves to wrestle and roll around on the ground. He loves when we push him over, hold him upside down, and roll around on the ground with him.

-He is obsessed with the tunnel at Miss Judy's. There have been a couple of times when we pick him up that he will crawl into the tunnel and we have to go in after him. I lured him out with my keys...AJ went in after him ;)

-He loves anything to do with being outdoors. We had a few nice days sprinkled in and we spent lots of time out back or at the park. We are definitely looking forward to more consistent warm weather and summer vacation!

-He is into anything he can investigate or explore. He likes to figure out how things work, move, make noise etc. He is a very curious little guy, and I have a feeling he is going to be one of those kids who takes things apart just to see how they work.

-Last month we started brushing his teeth and he is obsessed with his toothbrush. I swear he would sleep with this thing if we would let him. After we get his jammies on at night he starts saying "tees-tees" and he will squeal with delight when we walk into the bathroom. There for awhile he would throw a fit and cry when we would take the toothbrush away from him, but he's gotten a lot better about it.

Dislikes

-Having his toothbrush taken away (see above)

-He isn't a big fan of walking in the stroller. He will ride along with me for 6 mile runs, but walking just doesn't seem to be as exciting for him.

-For the most part he is a really happy baby...he doesn't like to be told know or have something taken away from him, but who doesn't? ;)

It's been a fun month, and while I feel super emotional about my baby turning one...I'm still so excited to see him continue to grow and change.
